This funding was provided through the California State's System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT) program. The program is designed to promote more sustainable freight transport practices, improve cargo flow efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact on communities surrounding ports.
Investment Portfolio Details
According to the plan, the funds will be used to invest in and put into operation zero-emission equipment, including:
● 61 zero-emission cargo handling equipment.
● 21 charging stations.
● 6 inland waterway vessels with zero emissions.
● 5 environmentally friendly port service vessels.
● 1 zero-emission locomotive.
According to the Port of Long Beach, this investment will help accelerate the transition to zero-emission operating systems and support the goal of making Long Beach the world's first zero-emission port.
Continue to Accelerate the Green Transition Roadmap
Sharing his investment plans, Dr. Noel Hacegaba, CEO of the Port of Long Beach, emphasized: “Expanding our portfolio of clean technologies is crucial to the future of cargo handling and contributes to protecting the health of the communities surrounding the port.”
He also affirmed the port's commitment to accelerating the transition to zero-emission technology: "We are shaping the future by deploying the most advanced zero-emission equipment today."“
Echoing this sentiment, Frank Colonna, Chairman of the Port of Long Beach Commission, stated that the new funding will further build upon the effectiveness of SWIFT's previous investment programs. He believes this investment will not only accelerate the transition to zero-emission operations but also enhance the reliability and efficiency of the port's cargo handling system.
