Thanks to the boom in e-commerce and the shift in supply chains, the air cargo industry in Vietnam is expected to continue its impressive growth momentum in 2026.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The demand for "air freight" remains high.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the latest statistics from the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in addition to the increase in passenger volume, cargo throughput at airports also grew in the first six months.<\/p>\n

Specifically, in the first six months of this year, the volume of goods handled through airports nationwide reached over 923,000 tons, an increase of more than 131 tons compared to the same period last year. This breakthrough is mainly due to the recovery in demand for import and export of electronic goods and international e-commerce.<\/p>\n

Of this total, cargo volume transported by Vietnamese airlines reached over 227,000 tons, an increase of 0.61 tons compared to the same period last year. The remainder was handled by international airlines.<\/p>\n

The strong growth in air cargo transport has created opportunities for Vietnamese airlines such as Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air to target the "air cargo" market.<\/p>\n

Vietnam Airlines is accelerating its cargo development strategy by improving its operational capacity and building a modern aviation logistics ecosystem. This includes investing in a dedicated cargo fleet and aiming to establish a specialized cargo airline in the near future.<\/p>\n

\u201c"This will be the foundation for the national airline to expand its transport capacity, increase supply chain connectivity, and meet the growing demands of both domestic and international markets," a Vietnam Airlines leader stated.<\/p>\n

According to the latest forecast from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air cargo revenue could reach $162 billion in 2026. The expanding market size also necessitates data standardization and increased connectivity between businesses in the logistics chain.<\/p>\n

Experts believe that three factors will drive the strong growth of air cargo in Vietnam in the coming period. Firstly, the shift in global supply chains due to tariffs and geopolitics is making Vietnam an attractive destination for investment in technology, electronics, textiles, and logistics.<\/p>\n

Secondly, there is the boom in cross-border e-commerce, especially in high-value goods requiring fast shipping. Finally, Vietnam's aviation infrastructure is receiving significant investment during the 2025-2030 period.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, key projects are laying the foundation for the industry's breakthrough. Long Thanh International Airport is expected to be a future "pillar of air logistics," while Quang Tri Airport, with an investment of over $230 million, will help alleviate congestion at key airports and expand the capacity for transporting high-value goods when it becomes operational.<\/p>\n

Overcoming bottlenecks in commodity data management.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Sheldon Hee, Vice President for Asia Pacific (IATA), Vietnam is a key growth market for both passenger and cargo aviation in 2026.<\/p>\n

Sheldon Hee predicted that, in the Vietnamese market, the growth of import and export activities and e-commerce will be the foundation for the growth of freight transport in the coming period.<\/p>\n

This also serves as a growth engine for businesses in the air cargo services sector in Vietnam. Many businesses achieved high profit levels last year.<\/p>\n

However, a bottleneck in Vietnam's air cargo transport today is that data for each shipment is still managed across multiple systems belonging to airlines, logistics companies, ground handling units, and other stakeholders.
