Operators who are at the forefront of enhancing cold chain supply capabilities, AI-powered payload matching, and cybersecurity-centric control center monitoring will be better positioned to translate volatility into profitability, while those lagging behind face rising insurance, labor, and compliance costs. Industry consolidation is accelerating following DSV's €14.3 billion ($15.78 billion) acquisition of DB Schenker, signaling increased bargaining power based on scale with carriers. Digital CEP networks like Ninja Van and Flash Express continue to gain market share from established, asset-heavy companies by combining small hub densities with variable-cost delivery fleets. Meanwhile, government-backed green corridor pilot projects are diverting some long-haul transport flows from road to coastal sea and rail transport, but road transport will remain dominant in first- and last-mile transport until 2031.

Some notable observations:

In terms of logistics functions, freight transport is expected to account for 57,601 TP3T of the ASEAN transport and logistics market share by 2025, while express delivery and parcel delivery (CEP) services are projected to grow at a CAGR of 7,031 TP3T during the period 2026-2031.

In terms of freight transport methods, road transport is projected to account for 67,331 TP3T of revenue market share in 2025; air transport is forecast to achieve the fastest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7,951 TP3T during the period 2026-2031.

In terms of freight transport methods, sea and inland waterway transport will account for 75,751 TP3T market share in 2025, while air transport is expected to record the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6,851 TP3T during the period 2026-2031.

According to CEP service destinations, domestic parcels will account for 64,371 TP3T of the market in 2025; international parcels are expected to grow at a CAGR of 7,301 TP3T during the period 2026-2031.

In terms of warehousing and storage types, non-temperature-controlled facilities dominate with a market share of 93,021 TP3T by 2025, but temperature-controlled space is expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6,941 TP3T between 2026 and 2031.

In terms of end-user industries, manufacturing will contribute 30,401 TP3T to the ASEAN transport and logistics market size in 2025, while wholesale and retail trade will record the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7,121 TP3T during the period 2026-2031.

By country, Indonesia leads with a market share of 46,521 TP3T by 2025, while Vietnam is projected to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6,601 TP3T during the period 2026-2031.

In addition, several factors contribute to market growth, including:

Element

~ The impact rate on CAGR

Geographical significance

Time of impact

The rapid development of temperature-controlled supply chains for vaccines, probiotics, and fresh food.

+0.9%

Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam; concentrated in cities such as Manila, Jakarta, Bangkok

Medium term (2-4 years)

The widespread deployment of cloud-based freight transportation platforms helps improve vehicle load factor.

+0.7%

Widespread adoption in the region began in Singapore and Malaysia, and is now expanding to Vietnam and Indonesia.

Short-term (≤ 2 years)

Government-backed green corridor programs are shifting long-distance traffic from road to sea and rail transport.

+0.6%

Coastal routes in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia; railway corridors in Vietnam.

Long-term (≥ 4 years)

The booming consumption of the urban middle class is strongly driving the development of hyper-local express delivery networks.

+0.8%

Metro Manila, Greater Jakarta, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur

Short-term (≤ 2 years)

Expanding bonded warehouses and special economic zones helps reduce warehousing time.

+0.5%

Gateway cities in Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines; special economic zones in Indonesia.

Medium term (2-4 years)

Real-time cross-border payment systems enable small and medium-sized enterprises to connect with regional e-export channels.

+0.4%

Gateway cities in Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines; special economic zones in Indonesia.

Medium term (2-4 years)

The rapid development of temperature-controlled supply chains for vaccines, probiotics, and fresh food.

Cold chain transport routes are growing much faster than conventional freight transport as vaccine distribution and e-commerce of fresh food both rely on maintaining temperatures at 2–8 °C. A $500 million grant from the World Bank announced in 2024 will support sustainable cold chain transit points across Southeast Asia. The National Institute of Food of Thailand forecasts annual cold storage growth of 12% until 2027, while Indonesia's pharmaceutical cold chain spending exceeded $1.2 billion in 2024, driving the construction of solar-powered warehouses meeting WHO pre-qualification standards. Ultra-low temperature transport routes for mRNA therapy push complexity up to –80 °C, enabling certified operators to achieve high profitability as GDP and HACCP audits tighten across member countries.

Cross-border e-commerce drives international growth.

Domestic parcels are projected to account for 64,371 TP3T of total volume by 2025, but international parcels (CEP) are experiencing strong growth at a CAGR of 7,301 TP3T, driven by cross-border stores like Lazada and Shopee. J&T Express launched dedicated flights connecting four major ASEAN economies in 2024, shortening delivery times to 3-5 days.

The ASEAN Single Window mechanism exempts parcels under US$150 from entry procedures, shortening customs clearance time from 48 hours to under 4 hours. The increasing complexity of return logistics is driving the formation of new cross-border transport networks. Domestic CEP counters are expanding small-scale parcel delivery services; Ninja Van's 250 centers handle 2.5 million parcels daily.

Air transport is gaining an increasing market share despite the dominance of road transport.

Road transport is projected to account for 67,331 TP3T of ASEAN's freight and logistics market share by 2025, while air transport is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7,951 TP3T by 2031, reflecting demand for high-end electronics, semiconductors, and biopharmaceuticals requiring 24-hour transit cycles. Changi Airport handled 1.85 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, an increase of 121 TP3T year-on-year.

Sea transport remains the primary mode of transport in terms of cost but is facing a 22% decline in 2024 due to overcapacity. Rail transport is gaining market share in bulk freight and green corridors where infrastructure upgrades are possible, with the ASEAN Rail Master Plan projecting $18 billion worth of rail modernization. Electric trucks and alternative fuels support carbon emission reductions in the road vehicle fleet toward Thailand’s 30% electric vehicle target by 2030.

Air freight forwarding is gradually gaining dominance over sea freight.

Sea and inland waterway transport will still account for 75,751 TP3T of transport value in 2025, while air transport is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6,851 TP3T by 2031 due to customer demand in the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries. Kuehne+Nagel recorded a 221 TP3T growth in regional air transport in 2024.

Digital-driven freight forwarding companies like Flexport are scaling 35% by providing a unified dashboard across multiple modes of transport, while alliance-driven ocean freight schedules create reliability gaps, driving shippers toward multimodal transport combinations. Rail and water transport offer cost-effective and environmentally friendly hybrid solutions where transport corridors are already developed, but asset supply still falls short of demand.
Perspectives from different countries:

Indonesia holds nearly half of ASEAN's freight and logistics market share thanks to its archipelago trade routes, a population of 275 million, and industrial manufacturing sectors in Java and Sumatra. The country's logistics performance index improved to 3.28 in 2024 following the digitalization of ports, highways, and customs, and the National Logistics Ecosystem reduced warehousing time at Tanjung Priok by more than a day. Americold's $80 million cold storage facility in Surabaya demonstrates the surging demand for vaccines and fresh food. A persistent shortage of 150,000 drivers is driving up wages and shrinking profit margins for operators.

Vietnam is the fastest-growing country in the region with a CAGR of 6.61 TP3T. Exports are projected to reach US$371 billion in 2024, and logistics costs as a percentage of GDP have decreased to 17.21 TP3T thanks to widespread customs and warehousing automation. Hai Phong's 8.5 million TEU capacity and deep-water port upgrades have reduced transshipment costs, while US$2.1 billion in FDI has flowed into distribution real estate.

Thailand and Malaysia are consolidating their positions as cargo transshipment hubs with the expansion of Laem Chabang and Port Klang, raising their combined capacity to over 34 million TEU by 2026. Singapore maintains its dominance in air cargo through Changi Airport's 1.85 million ton cargo flow, while the Philippines and Cambodia are attracting investors to specialized bonded warehouse areas, aiming to reduce customs wait times and ensure just-in-time assembly.

Source: https://www.mordorintelligence.com/industry-reports/asean-freight-and-logistics-market

Theo Mordor Intelligence, dự kiến quy mô thị trường vận tải và logistics ASEAN đạt 288,24 tỷ USD vào năm 2025, 305,98 tỷ USD vào năm 2026 và 406,10 tỷ USD vào năm 2031, với tốc độ tăng trưởng kép hàng năm (CAGR) là 5,82% từ năm 2026 đến năm 2031.
