Steel coils are a category of goods requiring specialized transportation due to their heavy weight and cylindrical shape. The arrangement of the cargo on the vehicle alone can directly impact securing methods, loading and unloading processes, and the ability to control movement throughout the journey.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In many shipping projects, steel coils are positioned Eye to Side \u2013 meaning the core of the coil faces to the side. This is not a fixed convention but rather a chosen option based on the characteristics of the cargo and practical handling requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is Eye to Side?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Eye to Side is a method of arranging steel coils with the core positioned horizontally instead of upwards (Eye to Sky). Each method has its own specific application conditions and is chosen based on the type of goods, transportation method, handling equipment, and project requirements.<\/p>\n

For many large cargo shipments, Eye to Side is often preferred when a combination of bracing and securing methods is needed to control cargo movement.<\/p>\n

Why was Eye to Side chosen?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the key reasons is its ability to assist in securing cargo. When the steel coil core is oriented sideways, chains or lashing straps can be arranged through the center of the coil (through-the-eye lashing), allowing the securing force to act directly on the cargo instead of just applying pressure to the outer surface. This arrangement helps to limit movement when the vehicle accelerates, decelerates, or turns.<\/p>\n

In addition, Eye to Side also facilitates integration with specialized wooden supports or brackets. Due to its cylindrical shape, steel coils tend to roll when placed on a flat surface. The support points help create a more stable base, distribute the load across the vehicle floor, and support the effective operation of the securing system.<\/p>\n

From an operational perspective, maintaining the same position of the steel coils from loading to transportation also reduces the number of times the goods are rotated. This facilitates lifting equipment and minimizes unnecessary impacts on the product during handling.
\nThere is no single solution that works for every shipment!
\nEye to Side is a commonly used method, but it's not the only option. In fact, Eye to Sky is still used for many different types of steel coils and shipping conditions.<\/p>\n

The choice of placement orientation always needs to be considered based on many factors such as cargo characteristics, load weight, handling equipment, transportation method, and securing plan. In other words, the goal is not to find the "best" arrangement, but to choose the most suitable option for each specific shipment.<\/p>\n

Behind a neatly arranged shipment of steel coils lies a series of calculations regarding orientation, support systems, anchor points, and lashing methods. Every detail is carefully selected to work together to control the movement of the cargo throughout its transportation journey.<\/p>\n
